This post shows how to use the SwiftDisc Burn Rights tool to allow non-admin users access to burner devices on Windows XP.

The instructions below are for SwiftDisc Burning Wizard 2.34. If you are using another version, some of the steps may vary.

Why the BurnRights tool is necessary:

If you are running SwiftDisc Burning Wizard under Windows XP with a user account that is not an administrator, it is possible that SwiftDisc may not detect the burning devices.

To solve that problem, the “Burn Rights” tool is provided on Windows XP installation.

1. Install SwiftDisc Burning Wizard.

If you do not have a copy of SwiftDisc Burning Wizard already, you can download it from http://www.swiftdisc.com. The program comes in two editions: Standard and Premium. Both editions, when installed on Windows XP, will also set up the Burn Rights Tool.

Note: The BurnRights tool is available only on Windows XP.

2. Run the BurnRights tool

You will need to run the tool as Administrator. To do so, right-click on the program in the Start Menu:

And choose the option “Run as…” and then select administrator.

Tip: If the option “Run as…” isn’t showing, press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard and then right-click on “Burn Rights.”

You will need to provide the Administrator user password.

3. Select the range of users to allow burning rights to.

The first step of the wizard allows you to choose how you want to permit burning rights – to all the Administrators, to all users of the computer, or to a specific group:

4. Select a specific group of users and apply changes

If you chose the first option on the previous page, this page will allow you to select a specific group to grant burn rights to.

If you previously selected the other two options, the drop-down will be disabled.

Note: When you press “Next >”, the changes to your system will be applied!

5. Exit the wizard

When you confirm on the previous page, the modifications will be applied to your system. After that, you can use SwiftDisc Burning Wizard normally.

Note: If you install new burner devices, you may need to run the tool again for the new devices.

The instructions below are for SwiftDisc Burning Wizard 2.34. If you are using another version, some of the steps may be different.

To create a boot disc, you have to use the Data Project.

Some things to keep in mind about creating bootable discs:

- You have to use completely blank (or erased re-writable) discs. You cannot append data to create a bootable disc.

- You cannot span data over multiple discs and create a bootable disc at the same time. If your compilation requires more than one disc of the selected type, the option ‘Make bootable’ will be disabled.

- You will need a boot image. You can create that using another software, or, as described below, you can read one from a floppy disc using SwiftDisc Burning Wizard.

The steps to creating a bootable disc are the same as creating a data disc until you get to the Data Image Settings page (step 6 of the Data Project post; please make sure that the data you select in step 5 will fit on one disc of the selected type).

By default, the option “Make bootable (click the Next button for boot setting)” is not selected.

To create a bootable disc, you need to select the “Make bootable …” option.

Then press the “Next >” button to move to the following page.

A bootable CD/DVD/Blu-ray is a disc that contains a special boot file that is an exact copy of a bootable floppy diskette or the boot record of a hard drive. You can use it to boot your system. The SwiftDisc Burning Wizard uses the El Torito Bootable Disc standard, developed by Phoenix Technologies.

Bootable disc configuration:

Create a bootable disc without emulation:

1. Select the “No emulation” option from the drop-down.

2. Click on the “Browse” button to select the image file for booting up.

3. Configure the advanced options.

Create a bootable disc with 1.44 floppy emulation:

In addition to 1.44, SwiftDisc Burning Wizard supports also 1.2 MB, 2.88 MB diskette formats.

1. Insert a bootable floppy diskette with system files for CD support.

2. Select the drive where the floppy diskette is inserted. Click the “Extract” button to create an image of the diskette.

3. Click on the “Browse” button to select the saved image file.

4. Configure the advanced options.

Advanced Options:

Load segment

This is the load segment for the initial boot image.
- If this value is 0, the system will use the traditional segment of 7C0.

- If this value is non-zero, the system will use the segment specified.

Note: This applies to x86 architectures only. For “flat” model architectures (such as PowerPC) this is the address divided by 10.

Sector Count

This is the number of virtual/emulated sectors which the system will store at Load Segment during the initial boot procedure.

When you are done with all settings, press the “Next >” button. This will take you back to the Burning Settings page (step 8 of the Data Project post).

SwiftDisc 2.31 has been released. There are major updates in a few areas:

PrimoBurnerTM engine update

Rip Audio CD options/formats interface modified

Progress page enhancements

An ISO image can be now drag-and-dropped for burning

For Windows XP: Burn Rights tool added

In more detail:

PrimoBurner Engine

SwiftDisc 2.31 uses the latest PrimoBurnerTM engine, featuring updates in various areas including device handling, Audio CD burning and ripping, and other enhancements.

Rip Audio CD Modifications

The interface for Audio CD Ripping has changed.

On the tracks list page, there are now buttons “Select All” and “Unselect All”:

Changes to Audio Format page

This page has been changed the most. In the older version, choosing the specific settings for WMA and OGG formats used to be done from a drop-down across from the respective format.

Now, those drop-downs have been replaced by “Change” buttons:

Pressing the button takes you to a new dialog where you can select the format you want your music saved into.

If you would prefer a specific settings combination to be the one selected every time you open SwiftDisc and choose that format, you can save your preference by using the “Set As Default” checkbox.

The settings available depend on the codecs installed on your computer that are relevant to the respective format.

Progress Page Enhancements

The enahncement on the progress page are:

For Rip Audio CD projects, the progress of each track is written as a percentage in the “Status” column

For Data Projects with disc spanning, you can now:

See the number of the disc that is currently being burned

See the progress of the burning over the discs of the overall project

For all projects, if there is an error or if you cancel the burning, now there is a “Back” button that allows you to return to an earlier page in the wizard and modify your project.

ISO Image Drag-And-Drop

Besides using the “Browse” button available at the Select ISO Image page this far, now you can directly drag-and-drop an ISO image into the selection box with your mouse.

Burn Rights Tool

This enhancement is valid only for Windows XP, where non-administrator users could not have access to the optical devices for burning.

The Burn Rights tool allows the administrator to enable the devices for all or a select group of users on the computer.

When you install SwiftDisc Burning Wizard, now there is a group in the Start Menu:

If you are using Windows XP, the contents of that group include both SwiftDisc Burning Wizard and the Burn Rights tool:

You will need to run the tool as an Administrator:

Then simply follow the steps of the wizard to grant access to the burners to the desired users of the computer.

In this post, I will show how you can use SwiftDisc Burning Wizard to archive data to CD, DVD or Blu-ray Disc using disc spanning. Disc spanning is required when the file set you want to archive is larger than the capacity of the target discs. The instructions below are for SwiftDisc Burning Wizard 2.30. If you are using another version, some of the steps may vary.

To span data over multiple discs, you have to use the Data Project.

Some things to keep in mind about spanning:

- You need to only use completely blank (or erased re-writable) discs. You cannot append data when you are recording one compilation over multiple discs.

- The files in the compilation need to be of smaller size than the discs you are using. SwiftDisc cannot record a single 1 GB file on two 700-MB discs; each of the files you want to burn should fit on the discs you are going to burn the project to.

- If you intend to use different types of discs when spanning, always use them in increasing order by size. After one of the discs has completed burning, the next media inserted will be checked against it, and expected to be of at least the same capacity or larger.

E.g. A correct order would be: 1. CD-R (700 MB), 2. DVD+R (4.37 GB). The other way around, SwiftDisc will not accept the second media.

When you are selecting the data compilation to burn (step 5 in the Data Project post),

You can switch on the disc spanning by checking the checkbox in the bottom right corner of the screen:

For best results, you should select the type of discs you will be using from the drop-down in the bottom left corner of the screen:

When you add data which will take up more than one of the selected types of discs, the colored bar in the middle will indicate how many discs will be necessary.

In the example above, you will need two blank 700 MB discs to record your layout.

When you have set up your compilation as desired, continue with the burning. The steps are exactly the same in the Data Project post. The process is exactly the same until the burning of the first disc has finished.

When doing disc spanning, after the first disc, the device tray will eject and you will be asked to put a new blank disc in the device. In this example, the first disc recorded was a CD-RW 700 MB:

Please insert the next disc, close the tray, and wait for the device to read the blank media. When you are ready, press “OK”.

If the disc is not yet recognized, or if it is invalid, the same message will be displayed again. Please make sure that the disc is blank, recordable, and of at least the same capacity as the previously burned one.

After you have inserted the new blank disc, the burning will continue:

After the burning is done, the final steps are the same as for any Data project. You can save the project for a future use, start a new project, or exit SwiftDisc.

In this post, I show how you can use SwiftDisc Burning Wizard to archive data to CD, DVD or Blu-ray Disc.

The instructions below are for SwiftDisc Burning Wizard 2.30. If you are using another version, some of the steps may vary.

1. Install SwiftDisc Burning Wizard.

If you do not have a copy of SwiftDisc Burning Wizard already, you can download it from http://www.swiftdisc.com. The program comes in two editions: Standard and Premium. For this tutorial, I will use SwiftDisc Burning Wizard Standard. However, if you want to use blu-ray discs you will need SwiftDisc Burning Wizard Premium, because the standard edition does not support blu-ray media.

2. Start SwiftDisc Burning Wizard.

Start SwiftDisc Burning Wizard by double-clicking the “SwiftDisc Burning Wizard” icon on your desktop. At first you will see the “About” window. Press the “Continue” button to close the “About” window.

3. Choose project.

You will see the first page of the wizard. Click the “Data Project” button.

On the next page click the “Archive Data To Disc” button:

If necessary, click the “Next >” button to continue.

4. Choose a device

The “Devices” page allows you to select the target CD/DVD/BD device. Select a device by clicking on it with the mouse. Basic information about the selected device and the disc in it is displayed under the device list.

Note: SwiftDisc Burning Wizard Premium allows you to select multiple devices to burn the same files to multiple discs (i.e. to create multiple copies of the same disc).

5. Select files

The next page is split to two panels. The panel on the top allows you to locate folders and files on your computer. The panel at the bottom contains the files that will be written to the disc. First find the files and folders on your computer in the top panel. Then drag the files and drop them in the bottom panel. You can also click the “Add” button. If needed, you can remove the files from the bottom panel by clicking the “Remove” button. Remember that the files and the directory structure in the bottom panel is what will be written to the CD/DVD/BD.

Hint: The colored bar at the bottom of the page shows the space that the compilation will take on the CD/DVD/BD. In case you are using a disc with a different size from the one selected, change the disc type from the drop-down menu at the bottom left corner of the page.

When you are done, click “Next >”.

6. Data settings

The “Data Image Settings” page allows you to set a volume label (a.k.a. disc title) and an image type. We recommend keeping the default image type and changing the volume label to something meaningful, so you can easily recognize the disc in the future. When you are done, click “Next >”.

7. Burning settings

The “Burning Settings” page allows you to select a few burning parameters like: whether you want to perform a simulation, burning speed and whether you want to close disc or leave it open. To start the burning, press the “Finish” button.

8. Progress

After the burning starts you will be redirected to the “Progress” page. The actual burning will take some time depending on your hardware and the size of the file set. Please wait until the burning has completed. When the burning finishes, click the “Exit” button to close the program, or the “Continue” button to go to the next wizard page.

9. Burn the same project again, or start a new project.

The last wizard page allows you to burn more copies of the same file set by inserting a new blank disc and clicking the “Burn This Project Again” button. The burning will start right away with the same settings. This is useful for burning the same data to multiple discs.

If you already own a SwiftDisc Publisher 2.X license you can upgrade to the latest 2.X release for free.

This post is about upgrading from the version that comes bundled with iRippit X50 to the latest version available on the SwiftDisc Publisher Web Site.

To upgrade for free you will need your existing registration information. That was emailed to you when you registered your copy of SwiftDisc Publisher for iRippit. If you have not registered SwiftDisc Publisher for iRippit yet, please see How to register SwiftDisc Publisher for iRippit for instructions on how to do it.

To complete the steps below you must have your existing registration name and key:

1. Go to the SwiftDisc Publisher Upgrade Page and click on the the “Upgrade” button.

2. You will be asked to enter your license name and key. Please note that capitalization matters, so copy and paste will probably work best. When you have entered the information, click on the “Submit” button.

3. Choose either the latest Standard edition, to which you can upgrade to for free, or the latest Premium edition, which you can buy at a discount. Click on the “Submit” button.

4. Follow the instructions on the next page. If you have chosen the free upgrade (i.e. the latest Standard edition), you will only be asked to enter and confirm the e-mail address to which your new keys should be sent.

5. Confirm by pressing “Submit”.

6. Go back to the SwiftDisc Publisher Web Site and download the edition (Standard or Premium) which you selected in step 3. Install it on your computer.

7. Start the new SwiftDisc Publisher. In the “About SwiftDisc Publisher …” screen, click on the “Enter Key” button.

8. Enter the name and the key you received in the email. Leave the company field blank. For best results, copy and paste the information from the e-mail.
