In this post, I will show how you can use SwiftDisc Burning Wizard to archive data to CD, DVD or Blu-ray Disc using disc spanning. Disc spanning is required when the file set you want to archive is larger than the capacity of the target discs. The instructions below are for SwiftDisc Burning Wizard 2.30. If you are using another version, some of the steps may vary.
To span data over multiple discs, you have to use the Data Project.
Some things to keep in mind about spanning:
- You need to only use completely blank (or erased re-writable) discs. You cannot append data when you are recording one compilation over multiple discs.
- The files in the compilation need to be of smaller size than the discs you are using. SwiftDisc cannot record a single 1 GB file on two 700-MB discs; each of the files you want to burn should fit on the discs you are going to burn the project to.
- If you intend to use different types of discs when spanning, always use them in increasing order by size. After one of the discs has completed burning, the next media inserted will be checked against it, and expected to be of at least the same capacity or larger.
E.g. A correct order would be: 1. CD-R (700 MB), 2. DVD+R (4.37 GB). The other way around, SwiftDisc will not accept the second media.
When you are selecting the data compilation to burn (step 5 in the Data Project post),

You can switch on the disc spanning by checking the checkbox in the bottom right corner of the screen:

For best results, you should select the type of discs you will be using from the drop-down in the bottom left corner of the screen:

When you add data which will take up more than one of the selected types of discs, the colored bar in the middle will indicate how many discs will be necessary.

In the example above, you will need two blank 700 MB discs to record your layout.
When you have set up your compilation as desired, continue with the burning. The steps are exactly the same in the Data Project post. The process is exactly the same until the burning of the first disc has finished.

When doing disc spanning, after the first disc, the device tray will eject and you will be asked to put a new blank disc in the device. In this example, the first disc recorded was a CD-RW 700 MB:

Please insert the next disc, close the tray, and wait for the device to read the blank media. When you are ready, press "OK".
If the disc is not yet recognized, or if it is invalid, the same message will be displayed again. Please make sure that the disc is blank, recordable, and of at least the same capacity as the previously burned one.
After you have inserted the new blank disc, the burning will continue:

After the burning is done, the final steps are the same as for any Data project. You can save the project for a future use, start a new project, or exit SwiftDisc.
