In this post, I will show how you can make a 1:1 backup copy of a CD with SwiftDisc Burning Wizard. The instructions below are for SwiftDisc Burning Wizard 2.30. If you are using another version, some of the steps may be different.

1. Install SwiftDisc Burning Wizard.

If you do not have a copy of SwiftDisc Burning Wizard already, you can download and install it from http://www.swiftdisc.com. The program comes in two editions: Standard and Premium. However, for this tutorial, we will use SwiftDisc Burning Wizard Standard edition.

Once you have set up SwiftDisc Burning Wizard, you can proceed to creating the backup of your disc.

In the steps below, the settings adjustments vary for your preferences, only the simplest ones are shown. You can find more information about each page, and the options available on it, if you press the "Help" tab in the upper left-hand area of the page.

2. Create an image of your original CD.

2a. Choose the project.

After starting SwiftDisc Burning Wizard, you will initially be shown an "About" dialog. Press "Continue". This will lead you to the initial screen of the program:

To create a backup of a CD, you must first start a copy project by selecting the option “Copy Project” and, if necessary, pressing “Next >”, which will lead you to the following screen:

The fist step to back up the disc is to save an image of the disc to your computer. Select the option “Create Image” and, if necessary, press the “Next >” button.

2b. Choose a device

The following page allows you to choose the drive where you have placed the disc you want to back up. Basic information about the device and the disc inserted in it is displayed for the selected item. When you have chosen the device, press "Next >".

Choose the respective device by clicking on it with the mouse.

2c. Information about the source disc

The next page displays the information about the size and type of tracks that are recorded on the disk that is copied. When you verify that the desired disc is recognized, you can press “Next >”.

2d. Set location where to save the backup image to.

In this step, you should select where on your computer you want the image of the disc (temporarily) stored. You can also select whether or not to read sub-channel data for the disc. This is applicable to some factory-produced Audio CDs; if you are not certain, you can leave the check box empty.

When you are ready, pressing “Finish” will start the process of copying the disc to your hard drive.

2e. Progress

On the next step, you can observe the progress of creating an image of the disc you are backing up.

When the process terminates, pressing “Exit” will let you close the program, and “Continue” will take you to the following page.

2f. Completion of this step

After the image has been created, you can choose to burn the image directly (that will take you to step 3 of his guide), start a new project (this will take you back to the screens from step 2a), or save the project for using it in the future.

3. Burn the image to the target CD(s).

You can now place the empty disc you want to back up to in the device you will be using.

From the last step above (2f), you can begin the new copy of the disc directly by choosing the option “Burn Image”.

Note: If you have started a new project, on the second screen in step 2a, choose the option “Burn Image”.

3a. Choose a device.

When you select the device where you have inserted a blank disc to burn to, press “Next >”.

3b. Burn image options

If you used the option “Burn Image” after you completed creating the image of the CD, coming to this page will load the location of the image you just created. If you are working on a new project, you need to navigate to the “Image.SDI” file by using the “Browse” button here.

You can choose a write method (you can leave the default method if you are unsure), and, if your disc is re-writable, you can erase it directly from this page.

If this is the last copy you want to create of his disc, you can choose the option “Delete image files after burn.” If you do, SwiftDisc will remove the files it created from your hard drive. If you want to create more copies, please leave the check-box empty.

Press “Finish” to burn your disc.

3c. Progress

In the next step, you can observe the progress of the burning process.

When the burning is complete, you can “Exit” the program, or “Continue” to continue to the next page.

3d. Finishing the project or burning more copies

Once you have burned a backup of your original disc, you can burn more copies of your disc immediately by inserting a new blank CD and using the option “Burn This Project Again.”

This will start the burning directly; you won’t need to select device or image location again. You can repeat this as many times as many copies you want to back up the original disc to.
